Barton: More than $1.5 Million Approved for Housing in Berks, Schuylkill Counties

June 13, 2025

HARRISBURG - Rep. Jamie Barton (R-Berks/Schuylkill) announced the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA) approved more than $1.5 million in funding for Pennsylvania Housing Affordability and Rehabilitation Enhancement (PHARE) applicants in Berks and Schuylkill counties.

“Housing availability and affordability continues to be one of the biggest challenges facing not just our counties or Commonwealth, but our entire country,” Barton said. “This funding will not solve the housing crisis, but it can go a long way toward helping those in need find some level of housing stability.”

PHFA awarded grants to the following organizations:

  • Berks Coalition to End Homelessness – $350,000 for the Berks Housing Stability Initiative.
  • Berks Community Action Program – $300,000 for Families and Individuals Rise (FAIR).
  • Berks County Nonprofit Development Corporation – $200,000 for the Eviction Prevention Program of Berks County.
  • Neighborhood Housing Services of Greater Berks – $90,000 for its HI Counseling Initiative.
  • The Salvation Army of Reading – $250,000 for housing programs for the chronically homeless.
  • Schuylkill Community Action – $150,000 for pathways to financial security and housing stability.
  • Servants to All – $125,000 for its homeless prevention program.
  • Service Access and Management – $100,000 for assisting and empowering at-risk youth to support housing.

Money to fund this round of PHARE applications came from Marcellus Shale impact fees and realty transfer taxes.
